Recently I have been busy shooting four iconic pho

Recently I have been busy shooting four iconic photos for 'Nedertarwe' from Royal Koopmans, working together with @saskiawagenvoort. Because 'Nedertarwe' (100% Dutch wheat) differs from commonly used wheat, and we want to tell a story, we looked for a style and approach that stands out and impresses. These photos have become the bearers of the campaign, and I am very proud of our team and of the result! It was such a great pleasure working with Saskia and our four models, and the end result is simply lovely.

We wanted to avoid the usual image of sidewalk signs with pictures of bread, bakers and happy people, because they no longer stand out in the street scene. That is why we have chosen to portray 4 models, each of which depicts a theme of the Dutch wheat campaign: remarkably Dutch, remarkably honest, remarkably sustainable and remarkably tasteful.

In this particular photo you see @akke_marije_ gently holding a loaf of bread made with Nedertarwe. The first photo of the series. Her pose and typically Dutch looks make her the perfect model for one of the pillars: remarkably Dutch.

For bakers, business to business, it is a big step to switch to a new type of flour. That is why it is important to properly explain the story of Nedertarwe. My colleagues from @debeycommunicatie have developed a very nice and usefull brochure especially for this use. If bakers switch to Nedertarwe flour, Royal Koopmans will support them in marketing and communication, which is unique in the industry.

A professor in love

Jan van der Bildt (1709-1791) was a Franeker instrument maker, working for the academy. His telescopes are still world-famous. When Jan was testing a new telescope from the bulwark, he saw professor Petrus Camper visiting a patient at Klein Lankum. Completely involuntarily, Jan also observed how the doctor examined the patient's wife in a very private way.

A few days later, the instrument maker and the doctor met at the academy. When the topic of their conversation floated to telescopes, Jan sincerely advised the professor to close the curtains, the next time he visited Klein Lankum. Shortly after the patient's death, Petrus Camper married his widow Johanna Bourboom.

The planets on the ceiling

Wool comber and amateur astronomer Eise Eisinga (1744-1828) lived in Franeker. His father was a miller and Eise could be found looking at the stars at night from their mill.

At the age of fifteen he wrote a book of over six hundred and fifty pages on mathematics. In 1774, an anonymous author claimed that two planets would come so close together in the sky that their gravity would throw the world out of orbit. Our planet would perish at short notice.

Eise knew that this story was nonsense. To show how it really worked he built a moving model of the solar system. To him, a simple table-top model was not satisfactory: he constructed a large planetarium in the ceiling of his living room. Why he did this is unknown. Neither do we know how his wife Pietsje reacted to his project.

'Anna Maria's Promise'

The photo that started the road to the Sony World Photography Awards, a classic series with a twist: combining a historical figure with a modern component.

Anna Maria van Schurman (1607-1678) was a very gifted linguist, theologian, poet and artist. Her father taught her Latin and Greek, geography, mathematics and theology. When she was fourteen years old, Anna came to Franeker with her family. Her brother started his study at the academy. Anna's father fell ill and shortly after her fifteenth birthday he died. At his deathbed Anna promised him that she would never marry. It was the only way to prevent the loss of her enormous talent. Anna kept her promise. She dedicated her life to the arts, religion and science. She corresponded regularly with almost all the leading scientists of her time and became famous all over Europe.
